Pests: Hornets
Hornets are among the pests that we rightly fear because their bite is painful and can constitute a real danger for humans.
Characteristics of the hornet
The hornet is the cousin of the wasp, which is explained by a priori similar appearance. The main difference is at the level of the size because physically the hornet is more imposing than its cousin which makes it scary in the eyes of some people. Unless he feels threatened, the hornet is not aggressive in nature, he uses force in case he feels danger approaching him or his nest. There are essentially two categories of hornet, namely the European hornet and the Asian hornet.
The ordinary European hornet measures between 21 and 25mm while the queen can be up to 35mm. It is distinguished by its brown legs and yellow abdomen.
The Asian hornet is native to Japan, it is less imposing than its predecessor but its venom is the most dangerous. The hornet, more particularly its larva, is a real popular dish in Japan, it is considered a source of protein and is eaten fried or raw. Surprisingly, hornet venom is the main ingredient of an energy drink popular in Japan.

Hornet lifestyle
Generally, the hornet builds its habitat in height which includes the attics, the trunks and branches of trees, the ceiling and the bushes. The constructed hornet’s nest is connected to its stand by a sturdy rod. A hornet colony can number up to 200 individuals, it is held by a single queen who under favorable conditions can lay up to 3000 eggs. The eggs turn into larvae, then into pupae and finally into adults after 21 days.
Fighting hornets
Even if in normal times the hornet is a passive insect, you still have to be wary of it, it only takes about 10 bites for you to end up in the emergency room. Check out our anti-hornet tips for living your best life:
– Smoke: Hornets cannot tolerate smoke from certain plants, such as thyme and coffee. This trick is quite effective and poses no danger to those around you.
– The basin of sugar water: mix the water and sugar in a basin and leave uncovered outside. All you need to do now is be patient because hornets attracted to the aroma of sugar will drown in it.
– Cloves: this involves crushing a quantity of cloves, arranging them in small dishes and placing them in the places where you have spotted the hornets. The smell of cloves will naturally scare away pests in your environment.
